this thesis discusses about the position of the registration of marriage relating to the terms of legitimate marriage under law No. 1 of 1974 which is still often being a dabate a,ong legal ecperts including judges, in connection with the arrangemen in the law that bring ambiguity understanding, whether including to one of the terms of legitimate marriage is done according to the law of each religion or belief. the future arrangement about the position of the registration of marriage relating to the terms of legitimate marriage and in order to empower the registration of marriage perceived urgentcy with low economic capabalities and low level of education, but also by the community with high social status and higher education. this study contains suggestion, efforts that can be made using the law as a tool of social engineering. so the registration of marriage can be effectively empowered to achieve order in the marriage law.
